Tens of thousands of Americans suffer from serious or traumatic brain injuries annually, known at "TBI." Many of these TBIs result from low speed, low impact accidents. Accidents result from motor vehicles, sports, construction accidents, and work-related accidents. Any trauma or jolt to the head or neck can cause the brain to bruise, bleed, tear, or swell.

TBIs occur when the brain is punctured or is forced forward and then backward quickly, or vice versa. The injuring force can cause bruising in some areas and bleeding in others.

Swelling may result from the body's healing mechanism. This is problematic since the skull chamber has limited space. This causes serious rise in intra-cranial pressure, which can be deadly or cause severe and permanent damages such as paralysis.

Open and closed brain injuries

An open injury happens when the skull is fractured. This usually results when the head comes in contact with a hard object. A closed injury does not involve a fracture, but can be more serious than an open injury due to the possibility of brain swelling and the formation of dangerous blood clots inside the skull. The most serious results of brain injuries are paralysis, loss of consciousness, and even death.

Symptoms

It is often difficult to know if someone has suffered a brain injury, especially when there are no fractures. Here are some symptoms to look for though:

Confusion and difficulty remembering recent events
Unusual fatigue, tiredness or sluggishness
Nausea and dizziness
Severe headache
Weakness or numbness on one side of the body

It is possible to suffer from a brain injury and still feel fine, at least initially. Whether you have these symptoms or not, you should immediately seek medical attention if you have the slightest suspicion that you may have brain injury.

What you can do

First of all, you must seek immediate medical attention.

If you or a loved one suffered a brain injury in an accident due to someone else's fault, you may be entitled to compensation. An experienced attorney may be able to help you.
